Were you recently diagnosed with a bone stress injury — more familiarly known as a stress fracture or stress reaction? These can be devastating injuries to an athlete, but they can also be an opportunity to regroup, reassess, and restore balance so that you can get back to doing what you love!
Often when an athlete is diagnosed with a stress fracture, they are told to rest for [x] weeks then “gradually return” to their sport. As a physical therapist (and someone who’s been through a couple of bone injuries!), this lacks any concrete guidance for what someone can do while the injury is still healing and the return to sport process. Resting alone, in many cases, is like leaving a few doors unopened and setting the stage for a subsequent injury! (And let me tell you: in my 10 years of professional experience, “gradual return” means something different to everyone, and it’s usually not actually gradual!)
The RESTORE: Bone Injury Program seeks to bridge this gap in our healthcare system. Upon your diagnosis, you will meet with your PT (me!) to set up a treatment plan for things you can safely do during the initial phases of recovery. Then we will meet 3 more times as your injury progresses along the healing continuum, to gradually prepare you for your return to sport. Finally, when you are cleared for full activity, we will have one more session together and you will actually be ready to go and confident in your ability to get back out there. From there, we will continue to progress via coaching for the next 3 months so you don’t go overboard and wind up with another injury!
