Physical Therapy vs. Wellness Services
Understanding the difference between Physical Therapy (PT) Services and Wellness Services can help you determine which option best suits your needs.
Physical Therapy Services
If you have an active injury that limits your function—such as a sprained ankle that prevents you from running or using stairs—this qualifies as a Physical Therapy case.
You will receive an itemized receipt for each visit, including diagnosis codes and a breakdown of charges.
A Good Faith Estimate will be provided, outlining the anticipated total cost of care.
Under NYS Direct Access law, care is limited to 30 calendar days or 10 visits (whichever comes first).
If you have a referral from a qualified provider (MD, DO, PA, NP, podiatrist), Direct Access limitations do not apply, and treatment can continue as needed based on your and your PT’s discretion.
Wellness Services
If you have minor discomfort that does not limit your function—such as occasional hip tightness that doesn’t interfere with daily activities—this qualifies as Wellness. Wellness services also include:
Improving technique, training capacity, or overall health and performance.
Proactive care to optimize movement and prevent future injuries.
Since wellness services do not involve a diagnosed injury, they are typically not reimbursable by insurance. Therefore:
No itemized receipts or diagnosis codes will be provided.
Physical Therapy Services
The private pay (cash-based) model allows us to focus entirely on your goals—without the restrictions imposed by insurance companies.
While the upfront cost may be higher, this approach often saves you money in the long run by providing:
✔ Higher quality, one-on-one care
✔ More effective treatment plans
✔ Fewer overall visits needed to see results
Please note: If you are covered by Medicare, Medicaid, Workers’ Compensation, or a No-Fault plan, you are not eligible for services at Immersion PT. I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience and would be happy to refer you to a trusted colleague who can better meet your needs!
